After finishing a long shift at her local animal shelter, volunteer Mary Nakiso was heading home when she noticed something unusual just outside the door — a blue bucket that hadn’t been there before. Curious, she walked closer — and what she found inside stopped her cold.
“Tiny, helpless puppies dumped behind the shelter, up against the wall, inside a blue bucket,” wrote Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, on Facebook. “Little teeny, tiny babies. Left like trash.”
Peering into the bucket, Nakiso found two tiny faces staring back at her — desperate, hopeful eyes belonging to two puppies too small to climb out. She didn’t know who had left them there or how long they’d been waiting, but she knew one thing: they needed help, fast.
Without hesitation, Nakiso scooped up the fragile pair and rushed them to Camino Pet Hospital, where veterinarians immediately began examining them. Sadly, the puppies soon showed signs of parvovirus, a potentially deadly illness, and one pup appeared to have a torn cornea.
Despite their rough start, the puppies — now named Wonton (the tan one) and Beetles (the black one) — were finally safe and in loving hands.
“They’ll finally be safe, warm, and cared for,” Hall wrote. “Sweet little angels … everything’s going to be okay now.”
It’s been a few days since their rescue, and while both babies are still recovering, their condition is improving every day. Wonton has responded well to treatment and is already wagging his tail again. Beetles will soon undergo surgery to remove her damaged eye — but even now, she’s full of love and affection for everyone she meets.
Once Beetles has healed, both pups will be ready for adoption — and rescuers are hopeful they’ll find a home together.
It’s hard to believe anyone could abandon such tiny, precious souls — but thanks to Mary’s compassion and quick action, Wonton and Beetles now have a bright future ahead.
“They’re just little babies, starting out their lives,” Hall said. “And now, they finally have a chance.”
