The RSPCA is appealing for information after a terrier was found in Cumbria with severe injuries believed to be the result of badger baiting.
The black-and-tan female, estimated to be around five years old, was discovered on Sunday 16 September in the Flimby area.
RSPCA Inspector Chris Towler said:
“She had serious lower jaw injuries where the skin had been torn away, along with multiple bite wounds to the front half of her body. Her right front paw was swollen, and the nail was missing. In our experience, these injuries are consistent with a dog being used for badger baiting.”
The dog, now nicknamed Winnie, was rushed to a vet for emergency treatment. She underwent surgery on her jaw and requires daily cleaning and packing of the wound with honey, which inspired her name.
“She’s recovering well and will be moving to one of our private boarding facilities today,” Inspector Towler said. “However, she still has a long road ahead.”
It’s believed the injuries occurred on Friday 14 or Saturday 15 September. Winnie also has an ulcer on her left eye. Although she is microchipped, the chip is unregistered, making it impossible at this stage to trace her owner.
Inspector Towler added:
“Regardless of how her injuries were caused, this dog has clearly suffered enormously. The fact that she was found straying rather than receiving veterinary care leads me to suspect she was deliberately abandoned to avoid treatment costs—further supporting the suspicion that she was involved in illegal activities.”
