Emergency Care and a Grim Discovery
The two dogs were rushed to Fairfield Animal Hospital for emergency veterinary treatment. While Jerry was found to be in relatively stable condition with injuries that could be managed, Ben’s state told a more painful story.
“Ben’s jaw was broken, and he had more than 20 puncture wounds on his face,” Stewart explained. “We don’t know when or how it happened, but with that kind of injury, eating would have been nearly impossible — which explains why he’s so thin and malnourished.”
Despite his severe injuries, veterinarians confirmed that neither Ben nor Jerry was facing life-threatening conditions. With proper care, both dogs now stand a chance at full recovery.
A Long Road to Healing
For Ben, however, the journey will be much longer. His broken jaw will require surgery and potentially three to five months of recovery time, possibly under the care of a veterinary specialist. In the meantime, both dogs have been placed in separate foster homes, where they can begin healing in safe, nurturing environments.
“When we put out the call for foster support — and it was New Year’s Eve, no less — the response was overwhelming,” Stewart said. “It was beyond heartwarming to see how quickly people stepped up to help. This community is truly incredible.”
Sweet Spirits, Bright Futures
Despite the trauma they endured, Ben and Jerry have won hearts with their gentle natures.
“Every single person who’s met them says the same thing — they are amazingly sweet,” Stewart emphasized. “Once Ben’s medical needs are met, we don’t expect any difficulty finding them forever homes. Their personalities shine through despite everything.”
