When the new owner of a house in St. Louis (USA) moved in and went down to the basement after hearing strange noises, he was shocked to find a pit bull chained in the dark. It appeared that the dog had been deliberately abandoned there by its former owner.
“I had just bought the house, and to my surprise, there was a pit bull chained in the basement,” the man told rescue staff. “I have no idea how long it had been trapped down there.”
Animal rescue volunteers quickly arrived to help. As soon as they opened the basement door and shone a light inside, they saw a tail wagging nonstop in the shadows. Natalie Thomson, the rescue team leader, recalled: “He was so happy to see us that he struggled against the chain, nearly choking himself. The moment he was freed, he couldn’t stop jumping up and trying to hug us.”
The look of joy in the dog’s eyes as he was unchained was unforgettable. He had probably been waiting for a long time, believing he had been completely abandoned.
The rescuers decided to name him Jumping Bean because of his excited habit of constantly leaping into people’s arms. Despite being left behind, Jumping Bean showed unconditional love to everyone he met. All he wanted was closeness, affection, and reassurance that no one would ever ignore him again.
Thomson said warmly: “Considering he was abandoned, his spirit is incredible. He’s such a sweet, affectionate dog. After what he went through, he seems to crave human connection even more. He just wants to be loved.”
