According to Independent on August 19, at the time of the fire, instead of running to safety, the pet dog named Polo stayed behind to protect 8-month-old baby Viviana.
Viviana’s mother, Erika Poremski, said she had just left the house for a few minutes when the fire suddenly broke out. She tried her best to reach her daughter but could not, and neighbors rushed in to help but could not reach Viviana either.
It was not until firefighters arrived that the baby was saved with 19% burns, and Polo had passed away.
“Thanks to Polo, Viviana only suffered burns to one side of her face and limbs… Throughout the fire, he (Polo) stayed with her in the bedroom and didn’t even go downstairs to the door,” she said.
Baby Viviana is currently being cared for in the hospital’s intensive care unit. Donors have donated nearly $16,000 to help her and her family.
Ms. Poremski thanks everyone for their help and hopes her child will be okay.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
