Makena’s Long Road to Safety
For over a month, a lonely pup wandered the streets of Los Angeles, peeking through gates and begging for scraps of food. Neighbors occasionally fed her, but she had no home — only an empty stomach and hopeful eyes.
When rescuer Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, saw a photo of the dog gazing through a fence, her heart sank. She called her friend and volunteer, Mary Nakiso, and rushed to the neighborhood.
They named her Makena and spent five hours trying to trap her. Just as they were about to succeed, a neighbor kicked the trap, sending Makena fleeing into the night. Heartbroken, the rescuers had to try again the next day.
The breakthrough came when a kind neighbor, Janet, called to say Makena was following her and her dog everywhere. Seeing how much Makena trusted Janet, Hall seized the opportunity. They led Makena into a yard — and, for the first time, she didn’t run.
“I literally cried tears of joy the whole way back,” Hall said.
Hall placed Makena in her car, where the tired pup burrowed under a blanket and finally let out a sigh of relief. Her month of homelessness was over — and she knew it.
At Camino Pet Hospital, Makena got a clean bill of health and a much-needed bath. Today, she’s thriving in foster care, waiting for her forever family.
“Now she can finally sleep and close both eyes after being homeless for so long,” Hall shared.
