Starving Dog Discovered in Abandoned Bronx Apartment After Owners Left Him Behind

Starving and Alone: Precious’s Fight for Life in the Bronx

In Williamsbridge, The Bronx, a dog named Precious is clinging to life after being discovered in an empty apartment—starving, emaciated, and crying out for help.

According to Second Chance Rescue NYC, the dog’s former owners had moved out of their apartment back in December. Neighbors assumed that the family had taken their pet with them, especially since no barking or signs of a dog were ever heard again.

But on February 1, everything changed. A young man walking through the building stopped in his tracks when he heard faint, desperate cries coming from behind the door of the vacant unit. Alarmed, residents forced the door open—and what they found was almost too much to bear.

Inside, lying weak and skeletal on the floor, was a dog barely clinging to life. She had been left behind, completely forgotten, and had somehow survived more than a month without food. Investigators believe the only thing that kept her alive was drinking from an open toilet bowl.

Her rescuers named her Precious.

Second Chance Rescue NYC rushed Precious to VERG South veterinary hospital in Brooklyn, where she remains in critical condition. The veterinary team is providing intensive care, fighting dehydration, malnutrition, and organ damage from prolonged starvation.

“This is one of the most heartbreaking cases we’ve seen,” shared Lisa Rose, a representative from Second Chance Rescue. “To imagine this sweet girl suffering in silence for so long is almost unbearable. We pray that after all of this, Precious is able to recover and find a family who loves and values her life.”

The organization is also working closely with the NYPD to pursue criminal charges against the dog’s former owner for abandonment and cruelty.

Precious’s story has already touched countless hearts, and supporters across New York are hoping this resilient survivor can pull through and one day know the warmth of a true home.
