Puppy Dragged Behind Car in Agonizing Ordeal Fights for Life After Heroic Rescue

Puppy Rescued After Being Dragged Behind a Car in Queensland

A puppy named Remi has been rescued after suffering severe injuries when she was tied to a tow bar and dragged behind a car in Brisbane, Queensland, on February 10.

The incident was stopped by Jeremy, a bystander who witnessed the car pulling out from a dirt track with the dog being dragged along the road. He intervened quickly and managed to bring the vehicle to a halt, saving the puppy’s life.

The puppy will remain on pain relief and antibiotics due to her high-risk wound infection

Remi sustained multiple traumatic injuries, including severe bruising, deep open wounds where skin and bone had been grazed, the complete loss of one paw pad, and a suspected broken jaw.

She was rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic, where veterinarians placed her in an induced coma for approximately one week. At the time, her chances of surviving the first night were considered very slim.

Remi (pictured) suffered from severe bruising, open wounds after her skin and bones were grazed, had one of her paw pads ripped off completely, and has possibly broken her jaw

Despite the prognosis, Remi managed to pull through. Her ongoing treatment is expected to cost up to $3,000. To support her recovery, Happy Tails Animal Rescue launched a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe, which raised nearly $6,000 within 22 hours of being posted.

Sally Chapman, president of Happy Tails, described the extent of Remi’s injuries:

  • Severe bruising around the jaw with a possible fracture

  • Complete loss of one front paw pad

  • Grazing injuries reaching down to the bone

  • Significant tendon damage, resulting in weakness and mobility challenges

Remi will require physiotherapy to restore strength to her tendons, as well as frequent re-bandaging every few days for the next several months due to the severity of the grazing wounds. She will also remain on pain management and antibiotics to prevent high-risk infections.

Although initially cautious and slow to respond to caregivers, Remi gradually began to recover her trust. It took several days before she was able to wag her tail confidently. She is currently being cared for at Jeremy’s home, where she appears most comfortable.

Remi will later be transferred to specialist veterinarians for additional treatment and potential surgical procedures to aid her long-term recovery.
