Sela the Survivor: Dog With Devastating Facial Injury Begins Her Healing Journey

When RCMP officers in Alix, Alberta, first found Sela, her chances looked grim. The dog’s face was so severely injured that veterinarians later called it the worst case they had ever seen. But thanks to the compassion of rescuers and strangers alike, Sela’s story is now one of resilience and hope.

Brought to Saving Grace Animal Society in Erskine, Sela quickly captured hearts despite her condition.

“Both veterinarians who examined her were shocked not only by the extent of her injury but by how she was handling it,” said Erin Deems, the shelter’s executive director and founder. “Her spirits have been so high.”

The cause of Sela’s wounds is uncertain — perhaps a cut or bite that became infected, leading to severe skin loss. Specialists who assessed her said it was the worst case they had ever seen, yet they still held out hope for recovery.

Determined to help, Saving Grace launched a fundraising appeal online. The response was overwhelming.

“Everyone has rallied for this dog,” Deems said. “Had people not stepped up, we wouldn’t have been able to afford her care. Donations came in from $2 to $200 — every bit has made a difference.”

With treatment, Sela’s condition has improved significantly, though her healing journey is far from over. “It’s going to be a two-month process to get her fully healed,” Deems explained.

Despite the pain she endures, Sela’s spirit shines through. “She couldn’t stop wagging her tail and giving kisses,” Deems said. “She’s been phenomenal — such a trooper.”

Once Sela makes a full recovery, the shelter plans to place her up for adoption, giving her the chance to live the happy, pain-free life she deserves.
