When Casper arrived at Ventura County Animal Services in July, he looked like a ghost of the dog he once was.
His fur was patchy, his eyes were tired, and though he had a microchip, no one ever came for him.
So Casper began waiting — quietly, hopefully — for a family who would never leave him behind again.
“When he first arrived, Casper was very shy,” said Jules Hooper, marketing specialist at the shelter. “But within a few days, he started taking treats from staff and volunteers. Everyone quickly realized how gentle and sweet he was.”
The veterinary team cared for his irritated skin, giving him soothing medicated baths. Casper sat so patiently through each one, as if he understood they were helping him heal — inside and out.
But as time passed, it became clear that shelter life wasn’t right for Casper.
He grew anxious and restless, barking endlessly and bouncing his ball across the kennel walls at all hours.
“At first, it seemed like he was just entertaining himself,” Hooper said. “But we realized it was really a coping mechanism for his stress.”
Casper didn’t need a kennel.
He needed a yard, a family, and someone to throw the ball for him — not to distract him from loneliness, but to share his joy.
And for a little while, he got exactly that.
A loving foster family welcomed Casper into their home, and for the first time in months, he got to run freely. He chased his ball under the sun, played basketball with the kids, and even had matching T-shirts with his foster parents.
“They LOVED Casper,” Hooper said. “He adored playing with his foster siblings — both human and furry.”
Sadly, the family’s smaller dog didn’t get along with Casper, and he had to return to the shelter. But this time, it’s different — he knows what love feels like, and he’s waiting patiently for it to come back.
“Casper remains incredibly sweet,” Hooper said. “He’s easy to walk, loves his baths, and is a total gentleman. We think a home without small animals — or as the only dog — would be perfect for our friendly ghost.”
Now, with his fur growing back and his spirit shining brighter every day, Casper is once again ready to chase his favorite ball — this time, in a forever home where he’ll never have to bounce it off metal walls again.
Somewhere out there is the family who’ll finally see what a perfect, loyal friend this gentle soul truly is.
