Injured Dog Left to Suffer — Police Urge Owner to Come Forward

Willoughby Police Search for Owner After Dog Found Abandoned Near Freeway

Authorities in Willoughby, Ohio are seeking the owner of a dog discovered abandoned for several days in a wooded area near State Route 2, according to a statement shared by the Willoughby Police Department on Facebook.

A Lonely Pup in Freezing Conditions

On Tuesday, officers responded to calls about a loose dog roaming near the St. Clair Street extension, east of Erie Road. When they arrived, they found a pit bull mix — described as friendly but frightened — wandering alone among the trees.

Police said the dog appeared to have been left behind for days in near-freezing weather, with only a discarded dog cage and an old pillow nearby, suggesting she had been abandoned in the area.

Rescue Efforts

Although officers attempted to catch her, the scared pup managed to evade them. Rather than leave her behind, police checked back multiple times, offering food and comfort until the Lake County Dog Warden could respond.

With assistance from the warden, the dog was finally brought to safety. She was transported to the Lake County Dog Shelter, where staff gave her the name “Lucy.”

Next Steps

Lucy is now safe and warm at the shelter, receiving food, care, and the attention she desperately needs. Police continue to investigate who may have abandoned her and are asking the public for information that could help identify her former owner.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Willoughby Police Department or the Lake County Dog Shelter.

Lucy’s story is yet another reminder of the importance of compassion and responsibility when it comes to pet ownership. Thankfully, she is now one step closer to the loving forever home she deserves.
