As Suzette Hall stepped through the trash-strewn floors of an abandoned house last week, her heart sank. Concerned neighbors had called her after hearing strange noises from inside. The tenants had moved out a week earlier — but something was still there.
“The neighbors kept hearing something — a cry, a whimper — and finally went to check,” Hall wrote on Facebook. “What they found was heartbreaking.”
Inside the empty house, surrounded by piles of garbage, was a lone white dog so severely matted she could barely move.
“This poor girl, left behind like garbage, was so matted she couldn’t even walk,” Hall wrote. “She was covered in tight, painful dreadlocks, and the itching was unbearable.”
The neighbors were stunned. When they called the former tenants to ask why they’d left the dog behind, the answer was chilling:
“[T]heir response? ‘We had nowhere to take her,’” Hall wrote.
For an entire week, the dog had been left without food or water, forced to survive alone. She was nearly out of hope — until her compassionate neighbors and Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, came to her rescue.
“Oh my gosh, I’ve never seen a dog so thankful when I showed up to save her,” Hall told The Dodo. “She just lit up.”
The pup, later named Eyelit, seemed to know her life was about to change. Despite every reason to distrust strangers, she allowed Hall to pet her, and then gently scoop her up.
“She knows she’s safe now,” Hall wrote.
Hall rushed Eyelit to the vet, where an examination revealed just how much she’d suffered.
“Her matting is so deep, the dreadlocks are pulling at her skin,” Hall said. “But through all the pain, she’s already giving kisses.”
The next day, Eyelit received a much-needed spa treatment — a soothing bath, careful grooming, and a fresh haircut. In just hours, she transformed from a neglected, downtrodden pup into a vibrant, youthful dog with her whole future ahead of her.
“For who knows how long, she couldn’t even see the world through the thick mats that covered her face,” Hall wrote. “But today, all the neglect, all the filth, all the pain is gone. Now, she sees. Now, she feels. And now… she shines.”
Today, Eyelit is thriving in her foster home. She’s finally safe, loved, and learning what it means to be cared for. Hall is confident that her best days are still to come.
“Eyelit has no idea just how beautiful her life is about to become,” Hall wrote. “But I do.”
