How can anyone explain to a frightened young dog in a loud, overcrowded shelter that a better tomorrow is possible?
For Skylar, that “better tomorrow” still feels far away. On August 6, she was brought to Memphis Animal Services after being found wandering as a stray. She was given the intake number #MASA48405 and quietly placed in a kennel among rows of other dogs — each with their own story, each waiting for a chance.
Shelter volunteers say Skylar is different. She doesn’t bark. She doesn’t cry. Most of the time, she simply sits and stares at the people passing her kennel, her eyes following them as if she’s searching for someone she once knew — someone who, sadly, never came to take her home.
Skylar is a three-year-old Pit mix with a soft Wheaten, White, and Black coat, weighing 49 pounds. She arrived at the shelter in good physical shape, but emotionally, she seems lost. Her heartworm status is currently unknown, but what is known is that time is running out.
Because of severe overcrowding, dogs like Skylar are at risk of being overlooked — and in shelters, being overlooked can be dangerous.
No one knows how long she was on the streets or what she endured before arriving here. What is certain is that she needs someone who will show her that the world can be gentle, that hands can be kind, and that love can reach even the most guarded heart.
Skylar’s future depends on someone stepping forward now — whether to adopt, foster, or rescue. In the right home, this quiet, watchful girl could blossom into the affectionate companion she’s meant to be.
