Heartbreaking: Puppy Discovered Suffering in Calgary Dumpster Put to Sleep

Loyal Pup Refuses to Leave Injured Friend Stranded on Freeway Until Rescuers Arrive

On New Year’s Eve in Southern California, a frightening situation unfolded on one of the region’s busiest freeways. For two stray dogs, the night could have ended in tragedy — but instead, it became a powerful story of friendship, loyalty, and compassion that touched everyone involved.

A Frantic Call for Help

Late that evening, Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy Dog Rescue, received a desperate phone call. A driver, shaken and worried, reported seeing two dogs darting across the highway lanes, narrowly missing speeding cars. One of the dogs appeared injured and unable to move, while the other refused to leave her side.

Without hesitation, Hall rushed to the location. She has spent countless nights rescuing abandoned, abused, and frightened animals, but she sensed immediately that this case was going to be special.

A Heartbreaking Discovery

When Hall arrived at the scene, she carefully searched the shoulder of the freeway and the nearby brush. There, lying motionless in the cold dirt, was a large Great Pyrenees who looked exhausted and in pain. Standing guard beside her was a small, scruffy wire-haired pup, pacing nervously and barking in fear.

The little dog had every chance to run off, but instead, he stayed glued to his injured companion.

“It was complete loyalty,” Hall told The Dodo. “The little one could have left, but he refused. He chose to stay right there with her, no matter what. He wasn’t going anywhere without her.”

Hall later named the devoted pup Ambrose, and his injured best friend became Seraphina.

Ambrose’s Devotion

Ambrose’s loyalty was clear from the very beginning. Every time rescuers tried to approach Seraphina, Ambrose hovered protectively, as if making sure they meant no harm. His body shook with fear, but his devotion never wavered.

“Ambrose was not going to leave her behind on the side of that freeway,” Hall recalled. “The moment he realized we were there to help, he lit up. He was jumping up and down, wagging his tail, as if saying, ‘Please, please save her!’”

For Seraphina, who lay trembling and unable to stand, Ambrose’s presence was a source of comfort. Even in pain, she seemed reassured by the little dog who refused to abandon her.

Rescue and Relief

With the help of fellow rescuers, Hall carefully secured Ambrose first, gently guiding him into her rescue van. Once he was safe, she turned her attention to Seraphina. The Great Pyrenees was heavy and weak, but with patience and determination, Hall managed to lift her to safety.

The pair was rushed to a nearby veterinary clinic for urgent care. Hall braced herself for the worst, fearing that Seraphina’s leg might be broken.

The news, however, was far better than she expected. Ambrose was perfectly healthy, and Seraphina’s injuries, though painful, were minor. Vets discovered that her leg was not broken at all — only a small surface wound and soreness that could be treated quickly.

Healing Apart, Reuniting Soon

For now, Seraphina must stay at the vet to finish her recovery, while Ambrose has been placed in a warm and loving foster home. Though temporarily separated, their reunion is already planned.

“Ambrose is with a foster until she heals, and then we are going to put them back together,” Hall explained.

In the meantime, Hall makes frequent visits to check on both pups. The way they greet her leaves no doubt that they remember exactly who saved them.

“Seraphina gets up on her back legs and wraps her arms around me, giving nonstop hugs,” Hall said with a smile. “And Ambrose is just as joyful every time. They are both beyond grateful. I have never seen two dogs so happy and thankful to be rescued.”

A Story of Friendship and Hope

The bond between Ambrose and Seraphina is more than just touching — it’s a reminder of the extraordinary loyalty dogs are capable of. In the face of danger, Ambrose chose to protect his injured friend rather than save himself. And thanks to a Good Samaritan’s phone call and Hall’s quick action, both dogs now have a future filled with safety, healing, and hope.

In time, Ambrose and Seraphina will be reunited, ready to begin the next chapter of their lives — together, just as they’ve always wanted.
