Phoebe’s Fight to Heal After a Tragic Hit-and-Run
Richland County, SC — On the morning of March 7, two employees of Accurate Diagnostics made a heartbreaking discovery behind their business on St. Andrews Road: a severely injured German Shepherd, unable to stand and in obvious pain.
They quickly rushed her to Paws and Claws Animal Clinic on Lake Murray Boulevard, where veterinarians knew immediate surgery was her only chance. The dog — now identified as Phoebe — was transferred to South Carolina Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Care, where surgeons removed her right hind leg to save her life.
Just a day earlier, investigators say Phoebe and another dog, a pit bull named Sophie, had escaped from their owner’s property. While Sophie is still missing, authorities confirmed Phoebe was struck by a vehicle on St. Andrews Road. There were no signs she had been dragged, but the incident is being treated as a hit-and-run.
Despite the trauma, Phoebe’s spirit remains strong. Veterinarians expect her to make a full recovery, adapting to life on three legs.
Phoebe’s owner, unable to afford the extensive medical costs, made the difficult decision to sign her over to Dogs Rock Animal Rescue NYC, ensuring she would get the care — and eventually, the loving home — she deserves.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is urging anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Both CrimeStoppers and Dogs Rock Animal Rescue NYC are offering a reward for leads.
As Phoebe begins her healing journey, the search for Sophie — and for answers — continues.
