Dog in Oklahoma Found Badly Injured After Chemical Exposure, Dumped in Ditch

A six-month-old puppy in Oklahoma is making a remarkable recovery after being found with devastating chemical burns earlier this year.

The dog, now named Zorro after the famous TV and film character, was discovered on February 9 abandoned in a ditch. His small body showed signs of chemical burns both externally and internally, leaving veterinarians fighting to save his life.

Officials at Horizon Animal Hospital believe Zorro may have been exposed to methamphetamine, either by inhalation or ingestion. The extent of his injuries was shocking.

“His eyelids are burned, his corneas are burned, his tongue is swollen and ulcerated. I don’t know if he swallowed it or inhaled it, but his whole intestinal tract is burned,” explained Dr. Cari McDonald, a veterinarian at the clinic.

Zorro was also severely underweight when found, suggesting he had been neglected for some time. His condition moved the entire hospital staff to tears.

Despite the odds, Zorro has begun to show signs of improvement. Just two days after his rescue, on February 11, the hospital reported:
“He’s doing great today. One of his eyes is open more, and he seems to be recognizing us. He is out of his bed and walking around.”

His treatment has included pain management and a blood transfusion, and thanks to round-the-clock veterinary care, the young dog is slowly healing.

News of his story sparked an outpouring of support from the community. Donations quickly surpassed the hospital’s initial fundraising goal, with thousands more raised to help cover Zorro’s recovery costs.

“People keep giving; the love this puppy has been shown is so wonderful,” said Joleen Hansen, clinical manager at Horizon Animal Hospital.

Police are still investigating the circumstances behind Zorro’s injuries, but no suspects have yet been identified.

For now, Zorro continues his fight to heal — a living symbol of resilience, supported by compassion from strangers near and far.
