Injured Dog Found Abandoned in Park Heights with Ruptured Tumor
Baltimore City Animal Control made a heartbreaking discovery on Sunday in the Central Park Heights neighborhood.
Responding to a report of an abandoned dog, officers arrived to find only a blood-stained crate — no dog in sight.
“They began speaking with local residents, and it quickly became clear that the dog had been left behind in the neighborhood about a week earlier,” said Bailey Deacon of the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS). “Everyone seemed to know the dog.”
The missing dog, named Peter, a small Chihuahua mix, was eventually located. What rescuers found was deeply disturbing — Peter had a massive tumor on his head that had ruptured.
“It was extremely difficult for all of us to see,” Deacon said. “We regularly deal with cases of abuse and neglect at BARCS, but this one was particularly shocking.”
Peter was rushed to the BARCS veterinary team, where surgeons successfully removed the infected growth. Now, he is healing from the operation and being carefully monitored.
“He has a large, intense scar that requires close attention,” Deacon added.
Despite everything he’s endured, Peter is on the road to recovery. He’s already found comfort in a foster home and is doing remarkably well.
“He’s like a completely different dog — happy, wiggly, and smiling,” Deacon said.
While BARCS understands that many pet owners are facing hardships, Deacon emphasizes that abandoning a pet is never acceptable. Help is always available.
“We know people can fall on hard times and may struggle to care for their pets,” she said. “But there is no excuse for prolonged suffering or abandonment. We’re just one phone call away.”
