Sick dog abandoned on New Year’s Eve sparks RSPCA appeal
A sick and injured boxer-type dog was found tied to a gate near the RSPCA’s Southridge Animal Centre in Potters Bar, North London, on New Year’s Eve. Nicknamed Teddy by staff, the dog had several swellings, including a large ulcerated lump that required urgent surgery.
RSPCA inspector Nicole Pendrell-Smith said:
“It’s heartbreaking to think that while so many of us were celebrating the New Year, Teddy was left alone in pain. Thankfully, he’s now safe in our care.”
The RSPCA reports a sharp rise in animal abandonment, with cases up 25% compared to last year, driven by the cost-of-living crisis. The charity is urging struggling pet owners to seek support through its new cost-of-living hub rather than abandoning animals.
