From Terrified Stray to Beloved Family Member: Choco’s Transformation
Last year, a kind family rescued a sick stray dog from the streets of New York. They gave him food, shelter, and love, but it soon became clear that the pup needed more care than they could provide. His skin was raw, his paws were inflamed, and even standing seemed painful. Hoping to give him a real chance at survival, the family brought him to AMA Animal Rescue.
The team at AMA immediately saw how dire his condition was.
“The moment we saw him, we knew he was in rough shape,” said Mariya Vlasova, cofounder of AMA Animal Rescue. “His skin was in terrible condition, his nails were severely overgrown, and he was clearly in pain.”
They named him Choco and rushed him to the vet for urgent care. Choco was battling a full-body skin infection and severe mange. His treatment included antibiotics, frequent medicated baths, and round-the-clock care. Thanks to the support of the 15/10 Foundation, Choco remained at the clinic for weeks, slowly regaining his health.
As the pain subsided and his skin began to heal, Choco’s personality emerged. He went from cowering in fear to cautiously wagging his tail and allowing the staff to pet him.
“Watching that transformation was truly beautiful,” Vlasova said. “We saw the first signs of trust replacing fear.”
When Choco was finally ready to leave the clinic, fate stepped in. A receptionist who had cared for him since day one volunteered to foster him. She already shared a special bond with Choco and wanted to see his journey through.
In his foster home, Choco blossomed. He made friends with the family’s other dog, followed his foster mom around the house, and strutted through the veterinary clinic like he was part of the team. Before long, it was clear that he had already found his forever family.
Today, Choco is a completely different dog — playful, goofy, and deeply loved. He has left his days of pain and fear far behind, and he now enjoys every moment of the safe, happy life he always deserved.
