Buried in Debris, One Puppy Waited for Someone to Find Him

Superman the Dog Survives Texas Floods and Waits to Reunite With Family

This week, catastrophic floods swept through Central Texas, leaving widespread devastation in their wake. The deadly storm has already claimed over 90 lives, and survivors are now facing the painful reality of rebuilding everything they’ve lost. Among those most deeply affected are the countless displaced pets now wandering through the wreckage, searching for their families.

One of these survivors is a gentle dog named Superman. Rescuers found him huddled in a pile of debris, his body trembling as he waited for someone to save him. Sadly, Superman’s person had passed away during the floods, leaving the loyal pup alone and vulnerable.

Local search and rescue teams spotted Superman’s desperate face amid the destruction and immediately moved in to help. At first, the frightened dog cowered away, too fearful and heartbroken to trust the strangers approaching him. But with soft voices, patience, and careful movements, the rescuers slowly earned his trust and were able to guide him safely out of the wreckage.

Once secure, Superman was transported to Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), where the medical team gave him a thorough exam. Physically, Superman had survived the storm with only minor injuries, but his emotional wounds were clear.

“Fearful and aching after being swept away from his home, Superman was hesitant to trust the search and rescue crews,” APA! wrote in a Facebook post. “With patience and a bit of dog-whispering, volunteers were finally able to earn his trust and safely remove Superman from the scene.”

APA! staff quickly connected with Superman’s surviving family members, who are still grieving the loss of their loved one and trying to rebuild their lives. While they want nothing more than to have Superman back with them, they need time to find stable housing and recover from the trauma of the disaster.

For now, Superman is safe in the care of a loving foster parent who understands what he’s been through. He’s receiving comfort, good meals, and plenty of affection while he waits for the day his family is ready to bring him home again.

“His surviving family, now grieving and having lost everything, are doing everything they can to hold on to the last piece of their past that remains — Superman,” APA! said.

Thanks to the compassion of countless volunteers and donors, Superman’s future is brighter than it was just days ago. He is a symbol of hope for the many families who are still searching for missing pets after the floods.

“[The floods have] been devastating for all living beings,” APA! president and CEO Dr. Ellen Jefferson said. “So many people are searching for their pets that are the last connection they might have to a lost family member. Pets are so intertwined in this saga, and it’s so important.”
