Dog Days Rescue, based in Kennesaw, Georgia, shared Baron’s heartbreaking story on Facebook, calling him “incredible” and “tender beyond words.” The rescue group has been documenting his progress over the past week, though some details are difficult to stomach.

One volunteer described the painful reality of his condition: “My car reeks of infection. There’s blood on the blanket and seats, and maggots dropped from his wound,” she wrote. “But I’d do it again a million times without hesitation.”

Baron’s injuries stem from an embedded collar — a tragic consequence of someone placing a collar on him as a puppy and never adjusting it as he grew. As Baron’s body developed, the collar became embedded in his neck, cutting deep into his skin. This is often seen in dogs kept chained outside with little to no human contact.

Despite being overwhelmed with dogs already, Dog Days Rescue couldn’t turn away from Baron after receiving a plea from a local shelter along with a graphic video of his condition.

“This is one of the worst embedded collar cases we’ve seen,” the rescue wrote. “It’s not the worst ever, but it’s up there.”

Baron, who is also underweight, was rushed to the emergency vet, where the team began cleaning and treating the deep, infected wound on his neck. He was placed on antibiotics and now receives regular bandage changes every few hours. The process includes removing dead tissue, alternating wet and dry dressings, and monitoring for infection.

Even in pain, Baron’s sweet spirit shines through. Clinic staff quickly fell in love with him, with several vet techs asking if they could adopt him.

“He has everyone smitten,” Dog Days Rescue shared with a smile. “He’s absolutely adorable.”

On Sunday, Baron took a brief break from his IV to bask in the sunshine—his first peaceful moment in what’s likely been a very hard life.

While the wound is healing, surgery to close it must wait. The edges have begun to form scar tissue, and surgeons need healthy skin to proceed. The vet team continues to clean and monitor the area as they wait for enough healing to safely operate.

In the meantime, Baron is receiving love and care from everyone around him. But his road to recovery comes with mounting medical bills, and the rescue is asking for help to continue his treatment.

“He’s still stable and loving everyone,” the team posted. “And everyone here absolutely adores his sweet personality and little face.”
