A faint whimper in the bustling street made the girl stop – Inside the bag was a fragile life that broke everyone’s heart

A helpless puppy was tied up in two industrial trash bags and abandoned on the streets of Brooklyn, New York. The tiny dog was found by a woman out on a walk, who burst into tears upon discovering the wounded creature—suffering from suspected jaw fractures and seizures due to pain.

On June 17, a video posted by TikTok user @hunttonn went viral, stirring outrage and compassion across social media. Hunter Tonn, who lives in Brooklyn, shared the shocking moment when she stumbled upon the puppy discarded like garbage.

While walking with her boyfriend, they heard faint cries coming from a pile of trash bags on the sidewalk. Following their instincts, they approached and cautiously cut open the first black garbage bag—only to find a second one tightly sealed inside. When they opened the second bag, they were horrified to see a small dog, badly injured and barely clinging to life.

“We heard the whimpering coming from the bag. When we opened it, we found this tiny creature thrown away like trash,” Tonn wrote in the video caption. “It was seriously hurt, and this was clearly intentional.”

After bringing the puppy home and washing it, the dog began to have seizures. Tonn rushed it to the emergency vet. The puppy, later named Scrappy, was diagnosed with a broken jaw and possible neurological trauma. It is now receiving intensive medical care.

Tonn urged viewers to share the video to help “get justice for this little soul.” The heartbreaking TikTok has received over 1.9 million views, showing Tonn walking down the sidewalk holding the bag containing Scrappy, her face stained with tears. Another clip shows Scrappy weakly lying on her lap, wrapped in a towel in the car.

Although most responses were supportive, some criticized her for “taking too long to open the bag.” In a follow-up video, Tonn explained her caution:

“We thought it could’ve been a rat. Of course, we still wanted to check if it was a dog, but we weren’t sure at the time,” she said. “Even if it wasn’t a rat, it could still bite me. What if it had rabies? I didn’t want to get rabies.”

She also feared that a panicked rescue might send the dog bolting into traffic:

“I didn’t want to pull it out too fast and have it run into the road and get hurt again. We were trying our best to be careful.”

Speaking to Newsweek, Tonn said she was deeply moved by the overwhelming support:

“I’m so grateful the video reached so many people. Now Scrappy is loved by so many. That warms my heart—especially after seeing how he was thrown away like he meant nothing.”

Scrappy still faces a long and expensive recovery. He has been transferred to a veterinary facility for continued care, though no further updates on his condition have been released.

From discarded trash to a symbol of resilience, Scrappy’s journey is a testament to the power of kindness, compassion, and the belief that every life matters.
