Abandoned and Starving, the Dog Lay Motionless in the Street Waiting for Death – Until a Stranger Brought a Miracle

A severely malnourished dog found abandoned on a busy East Grand Rapids street is now receiving life-saving care — and a second chance — thanks to the compassion of neighbors and veterinary staff.

The dog, now named Hope, was discovered lying in the middle of Lakeside Drive SE near Lansing Street SE early Friday morning. Emilee Bond said her husband spotted the dog during his walk and initially feared she had been hit by a car.

“She looked to be in terrible condition,” Bond recalled. “She couldn’t even make it to the curb — just skin and bones.”

Neighbors quickly responded by offering food and water before one kind individual transported Hope to a nearby animal hospital. There, staff estimated she is around 7 years old and suspect she had been used as a breeding dog due to signs of repeated litters — then discarded when she was no longer “useful.”

“We don’t deserve dogs,” Bond said. “They are so good. Anyone who’s ever loved a dog knows that. To see such an innocent creature in this state has really touched the hearts of our community — and far beyond.”

Hope was later transferred to a specialized facility, where she is now receiving intensive care with the aid of a feeding tube. Her medical expenses are expected to reach tens of thousands of dollars.

To help, Bond launched a GoFundMe campaign on Friday. It quickly surpassed its $10,000 goal and has now raised more than $15,000, thanks to an outpouring of support from both the Grand Rapids community and animal lovers across the country.

“This story has really spread,” said Bond. “The overwhelming support has brought so much hope — for Hope, and for all of us.”
