Evan was just 7 weeks old when he was rescued from a large shelter in Texas. Thankfully, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC stepped in to save him after discovering he had a large, badly infected burn wound on his back. The rescue team acted quickly to give the tiny pup a chance at survival, rushing him to an emergency vet for immediate care.
Due to the severity of the injury — and Evan’s small size — the vet treated the wound and placed him in a full body cast to protect and support his healing.
To bring a little joy to an otherwise serious situation, the vet decorated Evan’s cast. His first bright red body cast was made to look like a giant strawberry, and later, his green cast featured a hazard symbol, adding a playful twist.
The cheerful designs not only lifted Evan’s spirits, but also brought smiles to the faces of everyone caring for him. In addition to his burn, Evan was also diagnosed with coccidiosis and kennel cough, both of which he began receiving treatment for right away.
Once he stabilized, Evan was placed in a loving foster home and was thrilled during the car ride, finally heading to a place where he’d be safe and cherished.
“He is a very happy boy who is still clearly a puppy — he enjoys chewing both toys and people,” said Michele Alexander, Evan’s foster mom.
Despite weighing just 4 pounds, Evan has a big personality. He’s mischievous, curious, and full of life. He loves playing with things he shouldn’t, napping in the cutest places, and simply being one of the most adorable puppies around.
Recently, Evan visited the vet again for a bandage change — and got some great news. He no longer needed the full body cast! His foster mom is continuing to care for his wound, keeping it moisturized and protected as it heals beautifully.
Once he’s a bit older and fully recovered, Evan will be ready for adoption — and his foster mom is confident that he won’t have to wait long for a forever family.
“He already has several applications and a lot of interest,” Alexander said. “He’s just a handful of handsome.”
