Young Cat with Shattered Jaw Rescued from Dumpster—MSPCA Appeals for Help
A young tabby cat is lucky to be alive after being rescued from a dumpster in Dorchester on Sunday by Boston Animal Control.
Now named Rooster, the 1-year-old male was found in a dire state, suffering from gruesome injuries that appear to have been intentionally inflicted. Without a collar or identification, no owner has been found.
Rooster was immediately transferred to the MSPCA-Angell, where veterinarians discovered the extent of his trauma.
“Rooster has a broken jaw, and his right eye was so severely damaged that it had to be removed,” said Mike Keiley, Director of Adoption Centers and Programs at MSPCA-Angell.
“This is one of the worst jaw fractures we’ve seen in a cat so young.”
Rooster is now stable but requires complex jaw surgery next week to restore basic functions like eating without pain. Without this procedure, his long-term quality of life would be severely compromised.
The estimated cost of the surgery is $7,000, and the MSPCA is appealing to the public for donations to help cover Rooster’s care.
“Our resources are stretched thin,” Keiley added.
“We’ve taken in thousands of animals already this year—many with urgent medical needs. Rooster deserves a chance to heal and find a loving home.”
Despite everything, Rooster has remained calm and gentle in the care of MSPCA staff, showing the resilience and trust that inspires hope.
