A heartbreaking case of animal cruelty on Jeju Island has sparked public outrage across South Korea.
Recently, South Korea’s popular online forum Bobaedream shared shocking images of a poor puppy that had been abandoned in a remote forest. The incident, which actually occurred on April 13, 2022, has only recently gained widespread attention.
The post included six disturbing photos showing the puppy — later named Joohongi — found with its mouth taped shut and front legs tightly bound with rope. The animal lay helplessly on the ground, unable to move, with visible injuries and mucus covering its body.
“I don’t know how long this dog had been tied up like this,” the rescuer wrote in an Instagram post.
“Its legs were bound in such a twisted way it couldn’t move at all. I found it lying hidden along a path covered with yellow canola flowers. I had to bring it to a safe place to cut off the restraints.”
After being rescued, Joohongi was taken to Hallim Shelter, a refuge for abandoned animals on Jeju. When the ropes were removed, Joohongi’s legs were completely numb, and it couldn’t walk. The cruelty left netizens furious:
-
“This is beyond inhumane. How can anyone do this to a living being?”
-
“Please don’t adopt animals just because they’re cute — only do it if you’re ready to care for them.”
-
“The pain in that little dog’s eyes says everything.”
Fortunately, under the care of volunteers, Joohongi has slowly recovered. Today, the once-abused puppy can walk again and enjoys peaceful strolls with its new caretakers.
This story reminds us all that animal welfare must be taken seriously, and cruelty must never be tolerated.
