Puppy Dumped in Stranger’s Yard Finds Comfort in a Golden Retriever’s Bed
A few weeks ago, Marty McAdams’ quiet Saturday afternoon was interrupted by a call from his neighbor:
“Come get your puppy out of my yard.”
Confused, McAdams looked down. His own dog — Cammie, an 80-pound golden retriever — was right there beside him. But when he walked next door, he discovered a heartbreaking surprise: a tiny 4-week-old puppy sitting in a plastic bin with a few dog supplies. Her paw was swollen, her eyes wide with fear. Someone had simply dumped her there and walked away.
The neighbors quickly agreed to help. They reached out to ThisIsHouston, a local rescue, which found a foster for the pup, now named Pebbles. But Pebbles would need to stay the night with McAdams and Cammie.
McAdams had rescued dogs before, including Cammie, who had only just escaped a puppy mill. He knew Pebbles needed comfort most of all. She clung to him, crying whenever he tried to set her down. “I probably sat on the couch and held her for four hours,” he said. That night, after some hesitation from Cammie, the little pup snuggled into the golden retriever’s giant bed and finally slept peacefully.
By morning, Pebbles’ spirit had already begun to brighten. She explored McAdams’ yard, stole more cuddles, and leaned against Cammie as if she’d known her forever.
Now safe with her foster mom — a vet tech — Pebbles is thriving. The swelling in her paw is healing, she’s playing with another foster sibling, and her confidence grows every day.
