British Couple Spend £2,300 to Give Disabled Puppy From India a New Life

A British couple has gone above and beyond to save a disabled puppy they met while on holiday in India — spending more than £2,300 to bring her home and give her a chance at a better life.

Indy, a mixed-breed pup, lost the use of her back legs after being attacked by another dog as a small puppy. When Angela and Ian Szczypka, from Benfleet, Essex, first met her at a rescue centre in Goa in December 2014, she was dragging her legs along the ground, leaving trails of blood behind her.

“She was the saddest-looking dog there,” Angela recalled. “We were told she had a broken back. Other puppies were hanging on her legs. She was just a frightened little dog sitting in the corner.”

The couple, who already keep chickens, rabbits, dogs, and cats at their smallholding in the UK, couldn’t forget Indy. Instead of enjoying a beach holiday, they returned to the rescue centre every day to volunteer — and to be with her.

Over the next nine months, Angela and Ian poured their hearts and savings into Indy’s future. Their expenses included her care at a daycare centre in India, veterinary treatments, flights, and specialized equipment. Indy now has her very own doggy wheelchair and even a pair of custom trainers to help her move around.

Now 18 months old, Indy is thriving in her new UK home. To everyone’s delight, vets have discovered that her spine isn’t completely severed — she can wag her tail — raising hopes that she may one day walk again.

“She’s just such a brave little soul,” Angela said. “Seeing her happy now, with her wheels, makes every penny worth it.”

What began as a heartbreaking encounter in Goa has blossomed into a story of compassion, resilience, and second chances. Indy, once abandoned and broken, is now surrounded by love and care — and finally has the future she deserves.
