Dog Eva Found Bleeding and Abandoned in Ditch — Owner Arrested in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas — Authorities announced the arrest of Erika Trevino, who is accused of animal cruelty in connection with the abandonment of a severely injured dog last year.

Trevino was taken into custody on June 22 on an outstanding warrant for cruelty to nonlivestock animals, according to a news release from city officials. She was booked into the El Paso County Jail on a $15,000 bond and released two days later on a personal recognizance bond.

In August 2023, Eva the dog was found injured and abandoned in a ditch, left to die, city of El Paso officials said.

The case stems from an August 2023 investigation by El Paso Animal Protection Officers and the El Paso Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Unit. Officers discovered a wounded dog, later named Eva, abandoned in a ditch and left to die. Investigators identified Trevino as a suspect.

In addition to the animal cruelty charge, jail records list two allegations against Trevino for parent contributing to nonattendance, subsequent second offense. Those charges carried $1 bonds each, and she was released on time served.

While the case remains in litigation, officials stressed that Eva’s story is one of survival. In her new adoptive home, Eva is recovering and now enjoys long walks, playtime, and the comfort of a loving family.

“Eva is a testament to the resilience of animals and the power of compassion,” the city said in its release.

Gina Ramirez, Animal Protection Field Manager, called the arrest “a significant step in our ongoing efforts to combat animal cruelty in our community,” adding that investigators are committed to pursuing justice to the fullest extent of the law.

Officials urged residents to report suspected abuse by calling 311 or 911 if cruelty is in progress.

“Together, we can ensure that all animals in our community are treated with the kindness and respect they deserve,” the release said.

The investigation was conducted by the El Paso Animal Services Protection Field Division and the El Paso Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit.
