Two Sick Puppies Rescued in Puerto Rico Find Comfort in Each Other
When animal rescuer Chelsey Williams first opened the crates holding two small puppies, she saw how frightened they were. But the moment the crates were turned to face each other, the dogs began to relax. It was clear that these two animals were inseparable.
The story began a few months earlier, when a man named Gamaliel, who regularly feeds stray cats in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, came across two abandoned puppies — later named Snow and Shylah. At the time, the puppies were only about seven or eight weeks old and suffering from severe mange.
Despite struggling financially and barely being able to provide for himself, Gamaliel took the dogs home. He attempted to treat them on his own for the first few weeks, but their condition continued to worsen. With limited resources, he eventually contacted Williams, founder of the Dorado-based rescue group Souls of Satos, for help.
Williams recalled, “It was one of the worst cases of mange I’ve ever seen. They were sick, scared, and completely broken.” The puppies were taken to a veterinary hospital, where they began receiving proper medical care.
Throughout their treatment, Snow and Shylah found comfort in each other’s company. They would curl up together and sleep, providing one another with security and reassurance.
After their release from the hospital, the puppies returned temporarily to Gamaliel’s home under foster care. However, Williams was determined to find them a permanent home outside of Puerto Rico. She explained that her organization does not arrange adoptions locally due to the ongoing challenges facing stray animals on the island.
To secure a better future for the pair, Williams contacted AMA Animal Rescue, a New York–based group, to help place Snow and Shylah together in a forever home.
