A little cat has proved the saying “cats have nine lives” to be true, after surviving the devastating earthquake that devastated central Italy last week.

A touching video posted online shows firefighters giving water to a kitten after finding it in the rubble in the town of Amatrice on August 29, six days after the earthquake.

In the footage, two men dressed as firefighters gently place a small plastic bottle of water into the mouth of the weak, severely dehydrated cat, which licks it hungrily.

The cat, named Gioi (Joy – “joy” in English), was taken to the vet for a check-up and then reunited with her family to the joy of her owner.

Frantic Daniel Tursini, Gioa’s owner, told rescuers: “I beg you, please find my cat, he means everything to me.”

The white and grey moggy was found after rescuers used a bulldozer to clear away the rubble.

Firefighter Andrea, who found Gioa, said: “I know what it feels like to have just been through an earthquake, and lose everything.”

As of the morning of August 26, 250 people were killed in the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the early morning of August 24 in Norcia, Central Italy, including at least 8 foreigners.

Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said at least 293 historical buildings were damaged or destroyed by the earthquake./
