Mange-Ridden Husky Abandoned, Wandering in Hunger but Refusing to Give Up

In December 2015, on the streets of Sacramento, a frail and starving Husky, covered in mange and sores, was found wandering aimlessly. In a heartbreaking condition, he had been abandoned and left to suffer—until rescuers from Front Street Animal Shelter stepped in just in time to save his life.

Despite everything he had endured, the Husky proved to be incredibly gentle and friendly. Touched by his sweet nature, the staff gave him the name Sugar.

After two weeks of treatment at the shelter, just before Christmas, Sugar was placed in the home of a volunteer foster family. There, he met Piel, another dog who was recovering from severe burn injuries. To everyone’s delight, the two dogs quickly became inseparable, offering comfort and companionship to one another.

Caring for Sugar was far from easy. He was allergic to some of the medications used to treat mange, and he also showed signs of disorientation. But with patience, creativity, and love, the volunteers found ways to help him heal. Instead of giving him oral medication that caused dizziness, they bathed him with medicated water — something Sugar grew to love. In fact, he would often stand on his hind legs, asking eagerly for his bath.

Beyond that, Sugar adored being wrapped in warm blankets and snuggling by the fireplace. From a broken, neglected stray to a cherished companion, he was finally experiencing warmth, comfort, and love.

Although Sugar was still in the recovery process and his fur was slowly growing back, hope had already returned to his eyes. The staff and volunteers remained optimistic, believing that once fully healed, Sugar would find his forever home — a family that would truly love and care for him unconditionally.
