Abandoned and Hurt, Dog Dumped in Trash Finds Hope Through Rescue

A young dog named Karma is clinging to life after being found brutally injured and left for dead in a dumpster over the weekend.

The two-year-old pup was discovered on Saturday afternoon by Ashley Gurka, who was throwing away garbage when she heard faint whimpering coming from inside the dumpster. To her shock, she found the dog barely conscious, bleeding heavily, and suffering from what appeared to be two bullet wounds to the head.

“She had a deep laceration on her head, she was bleeding a lot, and there were other marks all over her,” Gurka recalled. “I just couldn’t believe someone had dumped her in there and left her to die.”

Overcome with emotion, Gurka climbed into the dumpster to comfort the terrified animal. “She looked so weak. If she died, then at least someone would be there with her, so she didn’t have to die in the trash all alone,” she said.

Ashley and her girlfriend, Jessica, both lifelong animal lovers, immediately contacted A Chance to Bloom Dog Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving abandoned and abused dogs. Volunteers from the group quickly arrived, scooped up Karma, and rushed her to an emergency veterinary clinic.

By Monday morning, Karma had been transferred to specialists at Texas A&M University’s veterinary hospital, where neurologists are now monitoring her condition. The rescue group said that while she is receiving intensive treatment, her condition remains critical.

“Karma is still not out of the woods,” the organization shared in an update. “She is being tube-fed, may lose her left eye, and could have sustained serious brain damage. Only time will tell if she can make a full recovery.”

For Gurka, the thought that someone deliberately inflicted such cruelty on the defenseless dog is unbearable.
“That’s animal cruelty,” she said firmly. “They don’t have the right to do that. They need to pay for this. There needs to be justice.”

Despite the unimaginable trauma she has endured, rescuers say Karma continues to show signs of resilience. Every time someone approaches her, she still manages to wag her tail — a small but powerful reminder of her will to survive.

As investigations into who harmed Karma continue, the rescue community is rallying to support her recovery. For now, her future is uncertain, but her fighting spirit has already inspired hope in everyone who has met her.
