Heartbreaking Discovery: Mother Dog and Puppies Abandoned in the Rain
In West Cork, Ireland, rescuers were left shocked when a German shepherd cross and her seven tiny puppies, only three weeks old, were found abandoned in the freezing rain.
The mother, later named Zelda, had been cruelly tied to a gate so tightly that she couldn’t reach her pups. Soaked, starving, and tangled, she had even tried to leap the gate to get closer—risking her own life in the process. Her puppies, huddled together for warmth, were hours away from death.
Thankfully, a passerby spotted the desperate family and contacted the West Cork Animal Welfare Group (WCAWG). Volunteers rushed to help, bringing Zelda and her babies to safety.
Zelda was found to be emaciated, suffering from mange, and too weak to produce milk, leaving volunteers to bottle-feed her puppies around the clock. Despite her suffering, she is proving to be a gentle and loving soul.
“Zelda was let down on every level,” said shelter volunteer Tory Joyce. “But now she and her pups will only know kindness.”
Support has poured in from around the world, ensuring Zelda and her babies get the care they need. Once healthy, they will all be placed up for adoption.
For now, Zelda and her pups are safe, warm, and loved — a reminder of both the cruelty animals endure and the compassion that can save them.
