Homeless Man Sentenced After Theft Spree — Including Breaking Into Animal Shelter to Steal Puppy
A homeless man originally from the Mohawk Valley will spend the next year in jail after admitting to a series of thefts that took place across Central New York last year. Among the crimes was a break-in at a local animal shelter that shocked the community.
Authorities say George Shuttleworth became the subject of headlines last summer when he forced his way into the SPCA on Molloy Road in DeWitt during the night. His target wasn’t cash or electronics — it was a young pit bull named Dumbo, who had already endured a difficult life. Dumbo was recovering at the shelter after being rescued from an abusive situation.
Investigators reported that Shuttleworth entered the facility without permission, took Dumbo from his kennel, and left the building. The theft quickly sparked concern among shelter staff, volunteers, and animal lovers in the area, who feared for the dog’s safety. Local law enforcement launched an urgent search for both the suspect and the missing puppy.
Fortunately, Dumbo was later recovered safely, though authorities have not released full details about the circumstances of his return. Shelter representatives said they were relieved and grateful that the dog was unharmed and could continue receiving the medical care and rehabilitation he needed.
Shuttleworth eventually pleaded guilty to charges related to the shelter break-in, as well as other thefts committed during the same period. A judge sentenced him to 12 months in jail, noting the seriousness of the crimes and the impact on the victims — both human and animal.
Dumbo has since remained in the care of the SPCA, where staff say he is making steady progress and will one day be placed in a safe, loving home.
