From Matted Fur to a Life of Love: Crawfish’s Journey
When 17 dogs were rescued from a severe hoarding situation last year and brought to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah, staff members knew they had their work cut out for them. Each dog had endured years of neglect, their bodies hidden beneath layers of thick, matted fur that pulled painfully at their skin.
“This is definitely the worst case of matting I have ever seen,” said Jenny Dolan, senior lifesaving care specialist at the sanctuary. “We often get dogs with mats, but this was beyond anything we’d encountered before.”
Among the group was a small dog who would soon capture everyone’s hearts — a gentle soul named Crawfish. While many dogs in his situation were understandably fearful and withdrawn, Crawfish surprised Dolan from the start. Despite his past, he greeted her with quiet trust.
His overgrown coat was so dense and heavy that it obscured his eyes completely. The weight of the mats made it difficult for him to stand and nearly impossible to walk. Crawfish was trapped inside his own fur.
Determined to give him relief, Dolan and a team of caretakers began the long, careful process of shaving away the tangled mass. It took hours of patient work, each snip revealing a little more of the dog beneath. Finally, Crawfish emerged — lighter, freer, and unrecognizable from the matted figure who had first arrived.
“We had no idea what he would look like under all that hair,” Dolan said. Beneath the grime and knots, Crawfish had a beautiful light brown coat, soft to the touch. Most importantly, he could move — and breathe — without the burden he had been carrying for so long.
Miraculously, despite the years of neglect, Crawfish had no serious health issues. Even more remarkable was how quickly he began to show his personality. He was playful, curious, and brimming with affection.
“He’s very affectionate,” Dolan said. “We were surprised.”
Of course, Crawfish still had a lot to learn. Everyday activities were brand new to him — walking on a leash, hopping in and out of cars, even lying on a bed. Eating treats was a challenge at first; when Dolan handed him a biscuit, he would bite into it only for most of it to tumble onto the floor. But Crawfish didn’t mind. To him, every crumb was a victory.
“He just seemed so happy,” Dolan recalled. “It was like every single thing we introduced him to was the best day of his life. He didn’t always know what he was doing, but he was eager to try.”
With each passing day, Crawfish’s confidence grew. He went on hikes, explored new surroundings, and soaked up every bit of love and attention from his caregivers.
After several months, it was time for his biggest milestone yet — finding a forever home. When a loving family came forward, Dolan knew it was the perfect match, though saying goodbye was bittersweet.
“[He] has spent the last five months coming into his own,” said Gavin, Crawfish’s adopter.
Now, Crawfish spends his days enjoying life’s simple pleasures — eating treats with confidence, lounging on soft beds, and being cherished as he always should have been. His transformation is a reminder that with patience, care, and love, even the most neglected animals can flourish.
