Severely Injured Dog Abandoned in DC — Investigators Suspect Dogfighting

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to those responsible for abandoning a severely injured dog believed to be a victim of organized dogfighting.

The young female dog—named Gilly by HRA staff—was discovered on March 29 on Jay Street in Northeast D.C. She had extensive injuries to her chest, neck, shoulders, forelimbs, and face, consistent with prolonged abuse in dogfights.

According to officials, Gilly was found inside a plastic crate, which she had chewed through in a desperate attempt to escape. She was rescued by an animal control officer and taken to the HRA medical center, where she received intensive treatment and has since been nursed back to health.

“Gilly suffered excruciating pain, likely over a period of time, and it’s horrifying to think it was for someone’s entertainment,” said HRA President and CEO Lisa LaFontaine. “Ending this barbaric practice requires the vigilance of our entire community. We hope this reward encourages anyone with information to come forward so we can seek justice for Gilly and prevent further cruelty.”

The HRA urges anyone with tips to contact them immediately to help bring those responsible to justice.
