A severely neglected and emaciated Caucasian Shepherd is lucky to be alive after being cruelly abandoned in Doncaster.
The RSPCA is investigating after the female dog—later named Sheila—was found in Balby on February 1 with four kilograms of matted, faeces-filled fur, a serious vaginal prolapse, and a painful neck wound caused by a tight collar. Rescuers believe she had been kept in filthy, confined conditions for a long period.
Discovered in the early hours of a cold night on Warde Avenue, Sheila was extremely weak and at risk of dying within hours. A concerned passerby rushed her to a vet in Kirk Sandall for emergency care, who then contacted RSPCA inspector Ben Cottle Shaw.
Sheila was transferred to the RSPCA’s Greater Manchester Animal Hospital, where staff shaved off her matted fur—revealing her skeletal frame with ribs clearly visible. She will require surgery for her prolapse and ongoing medical care.
“There is evidence she had been tied up for a long time, possibly used for breeding, then discarded when she was no longer useful,” Ben said. “Despite everything, she is a gentle, loving dog. She has a long road to recovery, but she’s now in safe hands.”
Sheila was microchipped, but the details were not registered. The RSPCA is urging anyone with information about her previous owner to come forward.
