Second Chance: Left for Dead, This Akita Fought His Way Back to Love

From Near Death to New Life: Alfie’s Remarkable Rescue

When RSPCA officers found Alfie, an Akita, collapsed in a small clearing on Kent Street in Scholes, Wigan, he was on the brink of death. It was March 2019, and the dog was so weak he couldn’t stand. His head was badly swollen from severe injuries, his vision impaired, and he was dangerously thin and dehydrated.

“I wondered if someone had left him thinking he was dead – but he wasn’t,” said RSPCA inspector Helen Smith. X-rays revealed fractures to his cheekbones and injuries to his back, believed to be the result of deliberate cruelty.

Alfie was rushed to the RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital for emergency treatment. Months of dedicated care followed, and slowly, he recovered. Though he lost some of his sight, Alfie’s spirit returned, and he found a loving new home. Now, he enjoys long walks and the affection of his adoptive family.
