Severely Injured Dog Found Dumped in Garden — Now Fighting for His Life

Shar Pei With Horrific Injuries Dumped in Macclesfield Garden

The RSPCA suspects a four-year-old female Shar Pei was used for illegal dog fighting and then abandoned to avoid costly vet bills.

The injured dog was discovered on Thursday evening (March 22) in the enclosed backyard of a home in the Park Lane area of Macclesfield. Her ear was hanging by a thread and in an advanced state of decay, suggesting she had been left untreated for at least two weeks.

RSPCA Inspector Steve Wickham described it as one of the worst cases of neglect he has ever seen:

“It’s shocking. I’ve never seen an ear physically bitten off like this. The fact that she was left to suffer without treatment for so long is heartbreaking.”

Investigators believe she may have been thrown over the garden wall to avoid vet costs or questioning. While it’s possible she escaped and was attacked by another dog, the RSPCA is keeping an open mind and appealing to the public for information.

The dog, now nicknamed Sunflower after Van Gogh’s famous painting, underwent surgery to remove the damaged ear and is receiving further treatment at Greater Manchester Dog Hospital.

Dog fighting remains a problem in the Macclesfield area, with a dedicated operations team working to combat the cruel practice. The RSPCA urges anyone with information to come forward immediately.
